Tk 1.42bn worth of public projects remain idle across Bangladesh

A comprehensive review has identified approximately Tk 1.42 billion in completed or near-completed development projects that remain non-functional across Bangladesh, raising fresh concerns about public investment management and accountability.

The stalled initiatives span diverse sectors and include luxury shopping malls, a diagnostic laboratory facility, and specialized dust-cleaning vehicles procured for environmental management. Officials indicate that while construction or procurement processes reached completion stages, these assets have failed to transition into active service, effectively rendering capital expenditures unproductive.

The accumulation of idle assets points to systemic gaps in project implementation frameworks, including unclear operational mandates, insufficient maintenance protocols, and coordination failures between responsible agencies. Such delays typically result in asset deterioration, escalating maintenance costs, and diminished returns on public investment.

Government authorities have faced mounting criticism over project execution timelines and post-completion management. The discovery of these dormant facilities underscores persistent challenges in translating infrastructure development into tangible public benefit, a recurring issue that has prompted renewed calls for enhanced oversight mechanisms and performance accountability across implementing ministries and departments.
