Top 50 marathons worldwide generate $6 billion economic impact in 2025

The world's top 50 marathons generated an estimated $6 billion in economic impact during 2025, underscoring the growing significance of mass-participation running events as drivers of revenue and social benefit.

TCS-partnered marathons emerged as dominant contributors to these figures, accounting for more than half of the total economic impact at 53 per cent of the $6 billion figure. The Tata Consultancy Services-affiliated events also demonstrated exceptional fundraising prowess, channelling 73 per cent of all charitable donations raised across the 50 marathons globally.

The data highlights how major running events have evolved beyond sporting fixtures to become substantial economic engines for host cities and regions. Marathon events attract international participants, boost hospitality and retail sectors, and generate spending on accommodation, transportation, and local services.

The strong performance of TCS-partnered marathons reflects both the scale of these events and their strategic positioning across key markets. The fundraising achievement underscores how mass-participation sports are increasingly leveraged to support charitable organisations and social causes.

These findings suggest that major marathons will continue to be pursued by cities seeking to enhance their economic profiles while supporting community initiatives and social welfare programmes.
