NEW YORK - Top seed Alexander Zverev secured his passage to the third round of the US Open after a hard-fought victory over Quentin Halys, the German prevailing 6-4 4-6 7-6(3) 6-7(3) 6-3 in a marathon encounter at Flushing Meadows on Thursday.
Zverev's progression came only after the world number one was taken to five sets by the Frenchman in a match that tested his composure and resilience. The encounter featured two tiebreaker deciders as Halys mounted a persistent challenge against the favoured seed.
The victory marks another narrow escape for Zverev in the early stages of the tournament, as the German has continued to face stiff competition from unseeded opponents. Despite the setback of dropping two sets, Zverev demonstrated the resolve required at Grand Slam level to overcome the challenge and maintain his campaign in New York.
Halys, competing at the US Open, pushed Zverev to the brink but ultimately fell short in the decisive fifth set, where the top seed's experience proved decisive in the closing stages.
