Toronto has adopted an unconventional cooling strategy that harnesses the naturally cold waters of Lake Ontario to regulate temperatures across its downtown core. The system extracts water from 83 metres beneath the lake's surface, where temperatures remain consistently cool throughout the year, and distributes it through a network serving more than 200 buildings across the city.

This deep-water cooling approach significantly reduces reliance on traditional air conditioning systems, which are energy-intensive and contribute substantially to urban electricity demand. By utilising the lake's natural thermal properties, Toronto has transformed a geographical asset into critical urban infrastructure while simultaneously lowering the environmental footprint of its downtown cooling operations.

The network spans over 40 million square feet of building space, representing one of North America's largest district cooling systems powered by lake water. Proponents of the initiative argue the approach demonstrates how cities can integrate natural resources with modern infrastructure to achieve sustainability goals without compromising comfort or functionality in high-density urban environments.
