The Trabaho party-list on Saturday threw its support behind the Department of Migrant Workers' request for an additional P1 billion in budget allocation for migrant worker social protection programs in 2027. The backing came during a House Committee on Appropriations hearing where the DMW presented its funding needs.
The additional funds would be channeled toward the Aksyon fund, according to the department's proposal. The initiative aims to strengthen social protection mechanisms for overseas Filipino workers, a critical demographic for the country's economy and foreign exchange earnings.
The party-list's endorsement represents growing legislative support for enhanced investment in migrant worker welfare. The Trabaho party-list, which focuses on labor and workers' issues, highlighted the importance of bolstering government programs that serve the millions of Filipinos working abroad.
The DMW's budget proposal comes as the government continues to prioritize support services for overseas Filipino workers, including pre-departure orientation programs, repatriation assistance, and welfare services. The 2027 national budget is currently being deliberated in Congress.
