Tracing the historical roots of Israel-Palestine conflict

The contemporary Israeli-Palestinian conflict did not emerge overnight but rather represents the culmination of competing claims to the same land stretching back generations. The movement for a Jewish homeland in Palestine gained momentum in the late 1800s amid rising antisemitism in Europe, while the region was simultaneously home to Palestinian Arabs who had inhabited the territory for centuries. These overlapping national aspirations set the stage for decades of tension and displacement.

The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 marked a pivotal moment, leading to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians—an event Palestinians term the Nakba or catastrophe. Subsequent Arab-Israeli wars, the occupation of territories following the 1967 conflict, and the expansion of Israeli settlements in Palestinian areas have remained persistent sources of friction. The blockade of Gaza and restrictions on Palestinian movement have further entrenched divisions and grievances on both sides.

Decades of failed peace negotiations, periods of violence, and competing narratives about historical rights have left the fundamental issues unresolved. Palestinian aspirations for statehood and self-determination remain in tension with Israeli security concerns and historical claims to the land. The October 7 attacks and ensuing military response represent the latest acute escalation in this prolonged conflict, bringing international attention to disputes that international mediators have struggled to resolve for generations.
