Traders must maintain invoices to document goods origin: CAA

The Customs Authority of Sri Lanka (CAA) has mandated that all traders must maintain comprehensive invoices and supporting documentation to establish the legitimate source of their imported goods. The requirement forms part of ongoing efforts to enhance supply chain verification and ensure compliance with import regulations across the country.

Traders are required to retain records that clearly trace the origin and movement of goods through the supply chain, from manufacturer or supplier through to the point of import. These documents serve as evidence that goods have been sourced through legitimate channels and in accordance with applicable trade laws.

The directive addresses concerns about unverified imports and seeks to strengthen the regulatory framework governing merchandise entering Sri Lankan markets. By requiring detailed invoice records, the CAA aims to reduce the risk of counterfeit, prohibited, or incorrectly classified goods entering circulation.

Traders who fail to maintain adequate documentation may face penalties and disruptions to their import operations. The CAA has advised all businesses engaged in importing to ensure their record-keeping practices align with the new requirements and to consult the authority for clarification on specific documentation standards.
