TRAI launches digital connectivity rating system for buildings

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a new platform enabling consumers and property developers to assess buildings on their digital connectivity standards. The move reflects growing recognition that indoor mobile coverage and broadband access have become critical factors influencing property values and tenant preferences.

According to TRAI, approximately 70-80 per cent of mobile data consumption in India occurs within buildings, underscoring the importance of robust indoor connectivity infrastructure. The digital rating system will provide transparent, standardized metrics that help property buyers and lessees evaluate connectivity quality before making purchasing or leasing decisions.

The platform is expected to incentivize property developers to invest in better telecommunications infrastructure, including improved signal strength, network redundancy, and broadband provisioning. Property owners can use connectivity ratings as a differentiator in competitive real estate markets, potentially enhancing asset value.

The initiative aligns with India's broader digital infrastructure goals as the country continues expanding 4G and 5G networks. By making connectivity performance visible and comparable across properties, TRAI aims to drive quality improvements while empowering consumers with essential information for real estate transactions.
