Train services slashed on Northern and Upcountry rail lines

Train services on Sri Lanka's Northern Line have been drastically cut in the aftermath of adverse weather conditions, according to the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Union. Daily operations on the line have been reduced from 18 services to just eight, representing a significant disruption to rail transport in the region.

Union Secretary Kasun Chamara Jayasekara disclosed that the Northern Line was operating at full capacity with 18 daily train services prior to the recent weather event. The substantial reduction in service frequency is expected to affect thousands of regular commuters who rely on the railway network for their daily travel needs.

The cutback in train services also extends to the Upcountry line, though specific figures regarding service reductions on that route were not immediately detailed. The disruptions underscore the vulnerability of Sri Lanka's rail infrastructure to severe weather events and their cascading impact on the transport system.

The union's statement highlights ongoing challenges facing the national railway operator in restoring full service capacity. Commuters have been advised to anticipate extended travel times and plan journeys accordingly until normal service levels are resumed.
