A transport industry body has called on the government to restore diesel fuel subsidies for a segment of roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) trucks that became ineligible following recent adjustments to vehicle classifications.
The association claims that several RoRo trucks lost their subsidy entitlements after the Road Transport Department (JPJ) modified how vehicles are categorized in its Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC) system. The reclassification has reportedly affected the commercial viability of operators relying on the fuel price support.
The group contends that the change in vehicle classification was not accompanied by sufficient notice to affected operators, leaving many unable to adjust their operations or appeal the decision in a timely manner. They argue that RoRo trucks, which are essential for inter-state logistics and commerce, should maintain access to diesel subsidies to keep transportation costs competitive and ensure the continuity of supply chain operations across the region.
The matter highlights ongoing tensions between government subsidy policy and the transport sector's operational requirements. Industry representatives are seeking dialogue with relevant authorities to either reverse the classification changes or establish alternative support mechanisms for affected operators. The issue comes amid broader economic pressures facing Malaysia's logistics and haulage sector.
