MANILA — Transport Secretary Giovanni Lopez made a strong pitch Friday for the reinstatement of funding for the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) bus carousel system, appearing before the Senate finance committee amid budget deliberations for 2027.

Lopez called for the restoration of P1.756 billion allocated to the proposed Edsa busway project, which has been zeroed out in the Department of Budget and Management's initial budget proposal for the coming year.

The Edsa bus carousel system is designed to improve public transportation capacity and efficiency on one of Metro Manila's most congested thoroughfares. The project has been identified as a key component of the government's transport modernization agenda.

The transport chief's intervention at the Senate hearing underscores the administration's commitment to advancing the Edsa busway despite budget constraints. The fate of the funding now rests with lawmakers as they finalize the 2027 national budget in the coming weeks.

The Edsa corridor remains a critical bottleneck in Metro Manila's transportation network, with the proposed bus carousel system aimed at providing dedicated lanes for high-capacity bus service.
