Transport group urges govt action as fuel costs squeeze jeepney operators

MANILA — Manibela, a prominent transport sector organization, has issued an urgent appeal to the government to address the financial strain on jeepney operators caused by escalating oil prices. In a statement released through social media on September 22, the group warned that continued fuel cost increases threaten the viability of public transport services relied upon by millions of commuters across the country.

Manibela chairman Mar Valbuena specifically called on President Marcos and relevant government agencies to develop and implement concrete support measures. The transport group emphasized that without decisive intervention, jeepney operators—who form the backbone of the Philippines' public transportation network—face severe economic hardship that could force many out of business.

The appeal highlights ongoing concerns within the transport sector regarding the government's response to volatile global energy markets.
