Transport Minister Flies AirBorneo, Backs Regional Connectivity Push

MIRI — Transport Minister Anthony Loke undertook his first flight with regional carrier AirBorneo on Wednesday, travelling between Miri and Limbang as part of a visit to assess air connectivity infrastructure in East Malaysia. The minister's journey highlighted the government's focus on ensuring reliable aviation links to underserved areas where conventional transport options remain limited.

During the trip, Loke stressed the critical importance of maintaining dependable air services to remote communities across Borneo. The region's geography and sparse road networks make aviation essential for connecting isolated settlements to major population centres, facilitating both economic development and access to essential services.

AirBorneo has positioned itself as a key player in regional connectivity, operating routes that serve communities with limited alternative transport options. The carrier's expansion reflects broader efforts by Malaysian authorities to strengthen domestic aviation networks and support economic integration across the country.

The minister's visit comes as the transport sector continues to prioritise infrastructure development in underserved regions. Officials have indicated ongoing efforts to evaluate and enhance air route viability, particularly for routes serving smaller population centres where commercial sustainability requires careful planning and support.
