Transport woes affecting nearly 1,000 Labuan schoolchildren, aid programme launched

KUALA LUMPUR — Transport problems are jeopardising school attendance for approximately 989 students across 25 educational institutions in Labuan, according to Education Ministry findings.

In response to the accessibility crisis, authorities have identified 437 pupils as eligible for transport assistance under a newly initiated aid programme. The scheme aims to address the critical gap between student residences and school locations that has emerged as a barrier to regular classroom attendance.

Labuan, as a federal territory with unique geographical and infrastructural characteristics, has long grappled with logistical challenges affecting service delivery. The transport difficulties encompass both the availability of reliable public conveyances and the affordability of commuting costs for families in the region.

The education ministry's intervention represents a targeted effort to mitigate dropout risks and ensure educational continuity for vulnerable student populations. Officials have indicated that the assistance programme will prioritise the most disadvantaged pupils while exploring longer-term solutions to improve transport connectivity across the territory.
