A jewelry store robbery in Sanjan, Gujarat, took an unusual turn when two alleged burglars, fearing retribution from local residents, decided that calling the police was their best course of action.
The suspects had entered the jewelry shop with apparent intent to steal, but found themselves quickly trapped inside as locals gathered outside, blocking their exit. Realizing they were cornered with an increasingly hostile crowd gathering, the men made a desperate decision.
Instead of attempting to fight their way out or wait for conditions to improve, the two suspects dialed 112, India's emergency police number, and called for help themselves. They informed police of their location and surrendered without resistance when officers arrived at the scene.
Police arrived to find the suspects already surrendered and cooperative, having calculated that facing legal consequences was preferable to facing the wrath of the assembled mob. The incident underscores how quickly situations can escalate when crimes are committed in populated areas, and demonstrates the protective role emergency services can play even for those on the wrong side of the law.
