Law enforcement authorities in Singapore are alerting the public to a growing wave of scams impersonating legitimate travel booking services, with financial losses mounting significantly in recent months.
The fraudulent schemes typically involve criminals creating counterfeit websites or using spoofed communications that closely mirror established travel platforms. Unsuspecting consumers attempting to book flights, hotels, or holiday packages are directed to these fake sites, where they enter personal and payment information that is subsequently misused.
According to police records, reported losses from these travel-related scams have totalled at least $185,000 since January this year. The actual figure may be higher, as not all victims file formal complaints with authorities.
Consumers are advised to verify the authenticity of booking platforms before providing financial details, use official mobile applications directly from app stores, and check payment security indicators such as HTTPS encryption. Those who suspect they have fallen victim to such scams are encouraged to lodge reports with the Singapore Police Force's Anti-Scam Centre.
