Tribal students to march to Mumbai demanding school facility improvements

Tribal students across Maharashtra are set to undertake a major march to Mumbai later this month to highlight persistent deficiencies in residential school facilities, according to organisers of the protest scheduled for September 28.

The demonstration aims to mobilise support for a slate of demands centring on basic amenities in tribal schools and hostels, which advocates say remain inadequate despite repeated assurances. The 180-kilometre journey to the state capital underscores student frustrations with conditions in facilities designed to support some of India's most marginalised communities.

Leading the charge, organisers have called for the resignation of Maharashtra's Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike, alongside the transfer of the Tribal Development Department's Secretary and Commissioner. These personnel changes, supporters contend, are essential to catalyse meaningful improvements in the sector.

The march represents an escalation in efforts to draw attention to longstanding grievances within Maharashtra's tribal education infrastructure. If successful, the protest could place significant pressure on state authorities to address the fundamental concerns raised by students dependent on these residential institutions.
