Prosecution officials said allegations by former senator Antonio Trillanes IV regarding China-linked financial transactions cannot be dismissed despite his withdrawal from Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial. The claims are serious enough to merit further scrutiny, prosecutors argued.

MANILA — Prosecutors have pushed back against suggestions that allegations made by former Senator Antonio "Sonny" Trillanes IV should be set aside following his decision to step back from Vice President Sara Z. Duterte's impeachment proceedings.
Prosecution spokesperson Atty. Benjamin "Jay" Tolosa Jr. said the financial claims, which reportedly involve China-connected funds and various transactions, raise substantial concerns that warrant investigation. Tolosa noted that Trillanes' withdrawal from the trial does not diminish the seriousness of the allegations or eliminate the need for proper scrutiny.
The former legislator had been expected to testify in the impeachment case against the Vice President. His allegations had centered on financial dealings that prosecutors said merit detailed examination by appropriate authorities.
The prosecution's position underscores ongoing tensions surrounding the impeachment proceedings, which have drawn significant public attention and raised questions about governance and financial accountability. Officials indicated that the investigation into the allegations should proceed independently of the trial's status.
