Trinamool's Abhishek Banerjee blames Supreme Court for West Bengal poll loss

Abhishek Banerjee, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress, has attributed his party's electoral setback to judicial intervention rather than electoral performance against the Bharatiya Janata Party. The West Bengal politician's remarks reflect growing tension between the regional party and the judiciary over election-related matters.

In a combative statement, Banerjee invited legal action against himself, declaring his readiness to mount a personal defence. "Let the government of India or the Election Commission of India take suo motu cognisance and file a case against me. I will represent myself and fight it at the Supreme Court," he stated, signalling his confidence in challenging any charges brought against him.

The statement underscores the Trinamool Congress's broader allegations of judicial bias during the electoral process. The party has previously contested various court decisions related to election conduct and candidate eligibility. Banerjee's remarks suggest the party plans to escalate its legal challenges in higher courts, potentially adding another dimension to post-election disputes in West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress, which has governed West Bengal for over a decade, faced significant electoral losses in recent polls. While the party has attributed setbacks to various factors including alleged administrative pressure from the Centre, Banerjee's latest comments point to what the party views as unfavourable judicial decisions during the campaign period.
