Work commenced on September 16 on the new Cardiology Unit at the District General Hospital in Trincomalee, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake overseeing the launch ceremony. The facility will serve the Eastern Province's growing demand for specialized cardiac treatment, centralizing previously dispersed services within the region.
The new unit is designed to provide comprehensive cardiac care services utilizing modern medical technology and equipment. Healthcare officials have indicated the project responds to documented healthcare gaps in the province, where residents previously required referrals to distant facilities for advanced heart disease management.
The construction timeline and project budget have not yet been publicly disclosed. Upon completion, the unit is expected to significantly enhance diagnostic and treatment capacity for acute coronary events, arrhythmias, and chronic cardiovascular conditions affecting the Eastern Province's population.
The initiative represents part of broader government efforts to strengthen provincial healthcare infrastructure and reduce urban-rural disparities in specialist medical services across Sri Lanka.
