Government accounts have circulated social media posts containing images critics describe as racially inflammatory, including a photograph of a Black man allegedly accused of food assistance fraud. The posts, which appeared on the platform X, featured Halloween-themed imagery and were shared just days before midterm elections.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins posted a photograph on Saturday showing the individual standing before stacks of currency with the headline "SNAP FRAUDSTER," referring to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program formerly known as food stamps. The image included the man holding what appeared to be burning currency.
The posts emerge as the Trump administration intensifies its focus on immigration enforcement and fraud prevention, framing these efforts as protecting taxpayer money amid rising healthcare costs and economic pressures affecting voters. Civil rights advocates and critics have condemned the imagery as inflammatory rhetoric designed to stoke divisions ahead of the electoral contest.
The timing of the posts, released days before voting begins, has drawn particular scrutiny given their apparent connection to broader administration messaging on immigration and government spending. Political observers noted the posts align with campaign narratives emphasizing border security and program accountability.
