Trump administration withdraws legal challenge to student loan forgiveness scheme
The Trump administration has ended its legal fight against a federal ruling protecting a popular student loan forgiveness programme for public service workers. The move comes after federal judges ruled that the Public Service Loan Forgiveness programme risked being used as a tool for political retaliation.

The Department of Justice dropped two appeals on Wednesday through single-sentence joint agreements, with each side bearing its own legal costs. The withdrawal marks a reversal in the administration's strategy after federal judges ruled in June in favour of civil rights advocates who challenged the government's approach to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) programme.
The PSLF scheme was established to encourage employment in public service sectors including government, public schools, fire departments, and police forces by forgiving loan balances after a set period of qualifying payments. Advocates had argued that attempts to overhaul the programme risked converting it into a mechanism for political retribution against organisations the administration disagreed with.
While federal officials did not provide any statement explaining the decision, civil rights groups hailed the withdrawal as a significant victory. "This is a significant victory for millions of Americans who have dedicated their careers to public service," said an attorney representing Student Defense, a civil rights advocacy organisation. The withdrawal removes uncertainty for hundreds of thousands of workers employed in public interest roles who depend on the loan forgiveness programme to manage their educational debt.
