Trump backs Irish reunification during Dublin visit

Trump said Saturday that reunifying the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland would be "fantastic," wading into a complex and historically contentious subject during a weekend visit to his Irish golf course.
At his meeting with Prime Minister Martin, Trump stated he would welcome the reunification of the island, saying "I don't want to cause any problems but I'd love to see it unified." He suggested the development was inevitable, adding "It's going to happen eventually. It may as well happen now."
Trump acknowledged the geopolitical complexity, noting that "the UK will have something to say about it, obviously." His direct commentary marks a departure from the cautious diplomatic approach traditionally adopted by American presidents on the fraught issue.
The question of Irish reunification remains deeply polarizing. The partition of Ireland and competing visions over whether Northern Ireland should remain British or become part of a united Irish state fueled decades of violence that claimed approximately 3,600 lives. While previous US administrations have largely avoided direct commentary on the subject, Trump's remarks highlight his willingness to engage in matters traditionally considered diplomatically sensitive.
