Trump, who has previously weighed in on athlete conduct during national anthem performances, posted the video on social media as part of his ongoing commentary on patriotic observances in sports. The footage depicted James engaging in stretching and warm-up movements while the national anthem played at a basketball venue.
The former president's criticism adds to a broader debate in the United States over athlete conduct during patriotic ceremonies. This controversy echoes previous disputes involving professional athletes who have taken various forms of protest during anthem performances, a practice that has drawn mixed reactions from the public and political figures.
James, one of the NBA's most prominent and accomplished players, has previously been outspoken on social and political issues. His representatives have not immediately responded to requests for comment regarding Trump's latest criticism.
The incident underscores the continued tension in American sports between expressions of political activism and traditional displays of patriotism, a divide that has intensified in recent years. Such moments frequently generate debate across political lines and among sports fans globally.
