US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday in a bid to reinvigorate stalled peace efforts over Ukraine, according to Russian state media. Kushner, who serves as President Donald Trump's son-in-law, was received at the airport by Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, the state news agency Tass reported. The diplomatic mission comes as both Russia and Ukraine have escalated their aerial bombardment campaigns across the contested regions.
The last documented visit by the two envoys to the Russian capital occurred in January 2026, when they met with President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. While the pair have not previously visited Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated he anticipated their arrival in the Ukrainian capital on Sunday, suggesting a coordinated diplomatic engagement with both sides.
The renewed diplomatic initiative represents Washington's attempt to break through an impasse in negotiations over the five-year-old conflict. US diplomatic focus has been diverted over the past six months due to escalating tensions with Iran, contributing to a slowdown in peace efforts. Russian President Putin had characterized negotiations as "frozen to a certain extent" earlier in the week, underscoring the challenging diplomatic environment the envoys face.
