Trump, Qatar's emir discuss de-escalation as West Asia tensions simmer

The conversation between Trump and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani focused on international initiatives to reduce tensions across the region, according to a statement from the Qatari ruler's media office. The two leaders discussed Qatar's ongoing mediation efforts aimed at achieving "a comprehensive agreement that ends the crisis and achieves security and stability in the region."

Qatar has positioned itself as a key intermediary between Washington and Tehran, seeking to prevent further military escalation in a region already strained by geopolitical rivalries and proxy conflicts. The phone call underscores continued diplomatic efforts to manage tensions even as the prospect of renewed US military action against Iran looms large.

The discussion comes amid heightened regional instability. In neighbouring Yemen, airstrikes struck a crowded market in a major city on Friday, leaving at least 30 people dead according to the health ministry run by Houthi rebels who control parts of the country. The incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian toll of conflicts across West Asia, where multiple armed groups and foreign powers remain locked in competing interests and military operations.
