Trump seeks Apple's backing to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum disclosed on Monday that Trump had directly approached Apple regarding the proposed name change. Speaking on Fox News' 'Mornings with Maria' programme, Burgum expressed confidence that the 'Lake America' designation would appear on Apple's platform in the near term. Apple has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

The lake, which has been known as Lake Ontario for centuries, forms a natural boundary between New York State and Canada's Ontario province. Trump's push to rebrand the waterway comes amid his administration's broader focus on geographic nomenclature and heightened US-Canada trade tensions.

Google Maps has already implemented the change for its US-based users, citing both Trump's recent executive order and the company's established protocol of adopting names designated by the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). The move reflects Google's practice of displaying location-specific names to users based on their geographic location, with Canadian users continuing to see the traditional Lake Ontario designation.

The renaming initiative represents part of a broader set of executive actions pursued by the Trump administration since his second term began, extending into areas traditionally outside direct presidential involvement.
