Donald Trump distributed a social media post containing a quote falsely attributed to Denzel Washington, in which the Oscar-winning actor was made to appear supportive of the former president. The quote does not correspond to any verified statement made by Washington.
Fact-checking organizations examined the claim and determined no evidence exists that Washington made such remarks. The actor has not publicly issued endorsements of Trump or confirmed making statements consistent with the fabricated quote.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about misinformation circulating on social media platforms, particularly involving false attributions of statements to public figures. Such practices have raised questions about the verification of content shared by political figures and the responsibility of social media platforms in addressing false information.
Washington, known for his roles in films including the "American Gangster" and "Equalizer" franchises, has maintained a relatively private stance on electoral politics compared to some of his Hollywood peers. The actor has not responded publicly to the false quote attributed to him.
