US President Donald Trump indicated he intends to request that European countries repay American assistance provided to Ukraine as it continues its conflict with Russia. The announcement reflects a long-standing position that wealthy European nations should bear greater financial responsibility for supporting Kyiv's defence efforts.
Trump has consistently argued that the United States has disproportionately shouldered the burden of aid to Ukraine while European allies, particularly those within NATO, have not matched comparable commitment levels. His remarks signal potential friction with transatlantic partners over the distribution of costs related to the ongoing conflict.
The demand for European cost-sharing comes as Western nations have collectively channelled tens of billions of dollars in military equipment, financial assistance, and humanitarian support to Ukraine since Russia's invasion in February 2022. European capitals have defended their contributions while acknowledging calls for increased defence expenditures.
