Trump Signals Willingness to Lift Biden Sanctions on Russian State Fund
The Russian Direct Investment Fund, which the Biden administration sanctioned following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, could face removal of restrictions under a Trump administration. The fund has channelled billions into Russian companies while expanding the Kremlin's global economic influence.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), a state-controlled investment vehicle that the United States targeted with sanctions after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, may see those penalties lifted under an incoming Trump administration, according to reports.
The RDIF has functioned as a mechanism for deploying Russian capital into domestic and international ventures, often in partnership with investors from Middle Eastern nations and other regions. The fund's operations have enabled Moscow to maintain economic activity and expand its global footprint despite Western sanctions imposed since 2022.
The Biden administration designated the fund and several of its subsidiaries as subject to sanctions, viewing it as a key instrument of Kremlin influence and a vehicle for circumventing international economic restrictions. The sanctions aimed to constrain Russia's ability to mobilise capital for strategic purposes during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
A shift in U.S. policy toward the RDIF would represent a significant departure from the current administration's approach to Russia and could signal broader changes in how the incoming government intends to handle sanctions regimes related to Moscow. The potential reversal reflects ongoing discussions about diplomatic pathways and economic relations between Washington and the Kremlin.
