US President Donald Trump has announced plans to double tariffs on automobiles imported from Canada, marking a significant escalation in trade relations between Washington and Ottawa. The move would substantially increase the cost of Canadian-made vehicles entering the American market.
The United States currently imposes a 25% tariff on imported vehicles containing non-US content. A doubling of this rate would bring the effective duty to 50%, placing it on par with existing steel tariffs that already burden imported steel shipments entering the country at that rate.
The proposal underscores Trump's continued focus on protectionist trade measures aimed at reshaping America's commercial relationships with major trading partners. Canada is a significant supplier of automobiles to US markets, with numerous manufacturing facilities producing vehicles and components for North American distribution.
