Turkey seeks parliamentary approval for Saudi Arabia military deployment

Turkey's ruling AK Party is preparing legislation that would enable the stationing of military personnel in Saudi Arabia under the framework of a joint defence pact linking Ankara, Riyadh and Islamabad, a party lawmaker said Wednesday.

The proposed parliamentary mandate would formalise military cooperation among the three nations and allow for Turkish forces to be positioned in the kingdom. The exact scope and scale of the deployment has not been disclosed, though such agreements typically involve training, coordination and security cooperation arrangements.

The move reflects Turkey's broader strategic engagement in the Middle East and South Asia, where it has sought to deepen defence ties with key regional actors. Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have similarly pursued military partnerships to strengthen their collective security posture.

Turkish parliament will need to ratify the deployment authority before any forces can be stationed in Saudi Arabia. The submission of the mandate is expected to proceed through the standard legislative process in the coming weeks.
