TVET graduates find work, but employers question job quality fit

KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) has called for a more comprehensive assessment of employment outcomes for technical and vocational education and training (TVET) graduates, cautioning that job placement figures alone do not indicate successful career progression.
While employment rates for TVET graduates appear positive on the surface, the federation has expressed concern that many graduates are not securing positions that align with their training or provide sufficient career development opportunities. This disconnect between available jobs and graduate qualifications represents a significant challenge for Malaysia's skills development strategy.
The MEF's assessment highlights the need for closer collaboration between educational institutions, industry bodies, and employers to ensure TVET programmes produce graduates with skills that match genuine market demands. The federation has emphasised that mere employment statistics mask underlying issues regarding job quality, salary progression, and skill utilisation in the workforce.
Malaysia's push to expand TVET pathways as an alternative to traditional academic routes has aimed to address skills shortages across various sectors. However, the MEF's observations suggest that additional focus on alignment between training content and employer needs is essential to maximise the value of these programmes and create meaningful career pathways for graduates.
