Two dead from leptospirosis as flooding grips Olongapo City

OLONGAPO CITY — Two residents have died from leptospirosis amid ongoing flooding in Olongapo City, according to data released by the city's health office. The deaths underscore mounting public health concerns as heavy rains continue to inundate several neighborhoods across the coastal metropolis.

As of September 3, the city health office had documented 27 confirmed leptospirosis cases, with 18 classified as active infections. Among the active cases, 14 patients were hospitalized while four were receiving outpatient treatment, the health office said.

Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated water, typically spreads during flooding when floodwaters come into contact with human populations. The disease can cause fever, headaches, muscle aches, and in severe cases, organ failure. Authorities did not immediately disclose additional details about the deceased patients or their medical histories.

Local officials have urged residents in flood-affected areas to observe proper sanitation measures and seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms consistent with leptospirosis. The health office continues to monitor the situation as weather conditions persist across the city.
