Two dead in Visakhapatnam as deep depression batters Andhra Pradesh coast

Visakhapatnam bore the brunt of the severe weather on Thursday, with several areas experiencing heavy waterlogging following the intense downpour. The city recorded approximately 170 mm of precipitation within an eight-hour window, causing significant disruption to normal life. At least 48 trees were uprooted by strong winds accompanying the system, adding to the infrastructural damage across the urban area.
Two fatalities were reported due to electrocution in separate incidents, highlighting the dangers posed by the adverse weather conditions and waterlogged streets. Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid venturing into flooded areas, particularly those near electrical installations.
The impact of the deep depression extended beyond Visakhapatnam to neighbouring Srikakulam district, where rivers including the Vamsadhara and Nagavali have risen to concerning levels. The India Meteorological Department has forecast that the system will maintain its current intensity for approximately 12 more hours before beginning to weaken. Officials have stepped up monitoring of river levels and are on alert for potential flooding in low-lying areas across the affected regions.
