Two held for shooting at Tipra Motha candidate in Tripura tribal polls

Authorities in Tripura have arrested two persons in connection with an attack on a Tipra Motha candidate during ongoing Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections. Khachindra Reang, 34, who is contesting from Ward No. 2 of Gamaria Village Committee, was injured when unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire as he exited a vehicle.

The incident underscores mounting tensions in the northeastern state as campaigning intensifies ahead of the tribal council polls. Police said the arrested individuals are being questioned to establish their involvement and identify any additional persons connected to the attack.

Tipra Motha, which emerged as a significant political force in Tripura, has been actively contesting the TTAADC elections. The party has previously flagged concerns over poll-related violence and intimidation of its candidates in various constituencies across the tribal areas.

Electoral authorities have intensified security measures at polling stations and candidate routes following the incident. Officials stated that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and possible motives behind the attack.
