The elevation of Marasinghe and Thilakaratne represents a significant development in Sri Lanka's judicial hierarchy, as both jurists transition from the High Court to the appellate tier. Their appointments come as the Court of Appeal seeks to strengthen its judicial capacity.
The ceremony, held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, saw both judges formally sworn in before President Dissanayake. The appointments are expected to enhance the court's capacity to address the growing caseload and expedite appellate proceedings.
These judicial appointments underscore the administration's commitment to reinforcing the independence and efficiency of the court system. The vacancies had necessitated the promotion of qualified and experienced jurists from the High Court bench.
The Court of Appeal serves as a critical institution in Sri Lanka's legal framework, hearing appeals against decisions made in lower courts and the High Court. With the addition of these two judges, the bench is positioned to strengthen its judicial operations during a period of ongoing institutional development.
