Two key factors may determine use of 17 new Sarawak seats in polls

The Elections Commission has identified the completion schedule for boundary review studies and the timing of Sarawak's state election as determining factors in whether 17 newly created state assembly seats will be available for use in the upcoming state election.
Elections Commission officials noted that the speed at which the redistribution exercise is finalised will play a crucial role in meeting any election timeline. The boundary review process must be completed and gazetted before the new constituencies can be officially recognised and used in electoral contests.
The 17 additional seats represent an expansion of Sarawak's state assembly from its current configuration. However, election officials cautioned that unless both the redistribution study and the state election date align appropriately, there may be insufficient time to implement the new boundaries.
State election authorities and the Elections Commission are coordinating on the matter to determine the most feasible approach. Officials have stressed the importance of ensuring any poll is conducted fairly and in accordance with electoral regulations, regardless of whether the new seats are utilised.
Sarawak's state government has yet to announce an official date for the state election, leaving some uncertainty about whether the new constituencies will be operational by that time.
