Two killed as under-construction building collapses in Old Delhi

The building collapse occurred at approximately 9:50 a.m. in Gali Sitara, a narrow lane adjacent to the Chawri Bazaar Metro station in Delhi's historic Old City market area. Rescue personnel and fire department officials quickly mobilized to the scene to extract trapped individuals and provide medical assistance.

The two fatalities were recovered from the debris following several hours of rescue operations. One person sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The cause of the structural failure remained under investigation as of Monday afternoon.

Chawri Bazar, one of Delhi's oldest and busiest wholesale markets, is characterized by densely packed commercial establishments and residential buildings, many of which date back several decades. Construction activity is common in the area as older structures undergo renovation or replacement to meet modern safety standards.

Local authorities have cordoned off the site pending completion of rescue efforts and a structural assessment. An inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collapse has been initiated by relevant municipal and construction oversight agencies.
