COTABATO CITY — Two men were shot dead in Paglat, Maguindanao del Sur, in a firearms attack that drew immediate police attention given the active election gun ban, regional authorities reported Monday.
The fatalities were identified as Ebrahim Mamalinta, 35, and another individual whose name was not immediately released by police. The shooting took place in the isolated village as the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) remains under strict weapons restrictions ahead of the September 14 Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections.
Capt. Steffi Salanguit, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PRO-ARMM), confirmed the incident and said investigators were working to identify the gunmen responsible. Details regarding the motive for the attack remained unclear as of reporting time.
The shooting marks the second fatal incident in the region during the election gun ban period, raising concerns among local authorities about election-related violence. Police said they are intensifying patrols and checkpoints in remote communities to prevent further armed incidents.
