Emergency services responded to reports of gunfire at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building just after 4:30 pm on Wednesday. Police officers entered the building within three minutes of the 911 call and discovered victims inside the high-rise structure, according to Minneapolis Police Sergeant Garrett Parten.
As officers moved through the building to locate the source of gunshots, they encountered dense smoke that significantly impaired visibility, forcing them to continue their search on higher floors. During the operation, three Minneapolis police officers were injured, including two who sustained gunshot wounds. All three officers were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
The incident resulted in two civilian fatalities, while the suspect was also found dead at the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding the suspect's death were not immediately detailed by authorities.
Sgt. Parten addressed the gravity of the situation during a press conference Wednesday evening, extending condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died or were injured. "This is a tremendously tragic event and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, the loved ones of those who lost their lives, those who were injured and with the injured officers and their families," he said.
