Two Malaysian men face death penalty in major drug seizure at Kuching airport

Police apprehended the two Malaysian nationals at Kuching International Airport following the seizure of 32.73 kilograms of Erimin 5 pills, a controlled depressant drug commonly abused in the region. The confiscated narcotics carry an estimated street value of RM3.3 million, equivalent to approximately US$808,000.

Under Malaysia's Dangerous Drugs Act, trafficking in such quantities of controlled substances can result in mandatory death sentences. The severity of the charges reflects authorities' commitment to combating drug trafficking operations across the country, particularly at major transportation hubs.

Erimin 5, known generically as estazolam, is a benzodiazepine frequently trafficked throughout Southeast Asia. The drug is particularly prevalent in recreational drug markets across the region, making airport interdiction efforts a critical component of Malaysia's counter-narcotics strategy.

The arrest at Kuching International Airport underscores ongoing concerns about drug smuggling operations in Sarawak, a major transit point for narcotics moving through Southeast Asia. Kuching airport, serving the state's capital, has become an increasingly important checkpoint in Malaysia's efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks.
