Police investigations into a sophisticated fraud case have resulted in charges being laid against two men following a significant financial loss by a Singapore resident. The 40-year-old victim was targeted by scammers who posed as representatives of retail chain Harvey Norman and staff members of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
The fraudsters successfully deceived the victim into surrendering $3,500 in cash, approximately $20,000 in foreign currency, and jewellery items. The scam exploited the victim's trust in established financial and commercial institutions, with the impersonators using official-sounding pretexts to convince her to part with her valuables.
The case underscores the evolving sophistication of financial fraud schemes targeting residents in Singapore and the broader region. Authorities have intensified efforts to combat such scams through public education and enforcement action against perpetrators.
Police have urged members of the public to exercise heightened vigilance when receiving unsolicited communications purporting to be from financial regulators or major retailers. Victims of suspected scams are advised to contact the Police hotline immediately and report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
