Two N95 masks may suffice for light use during haze season
A National University of Singapore public health expert says the durability of two complimentary N95 masks depends heavily on usage patterns. Those commuting briefly may stretch them for a week, while extended outdoor exposure demands more frequent replacement.

Singaporeans receiving two free N95 masks during haze episodes should assess their individual needs before determining whether the supply will last, according to guidance from public health specialists. The masks' lifespan varies significantly based on how long and how frequently they are worn.
For residents whose outdoor exposure is limited to short commutes and brief errands, two masks can reasonably last approximately one week before requiring replacement. However, individuals who spend several hours daily outdoors—whether for work, exercise, or other activities—should plan on changing their masks more regularly to maintain effective air filtration.
Experts emphasize that proper mask care extends usability. N95 masks can be safely stored and reused multiple times if kept dry and handled carefully between uses. Users should avoid touching the mask's inner or outer surfaces and store masks in paper bags rather than plastic containers, which can trap moisture and degrade the mask's filtering capability.
The protective effectiveness of N95 masks remains the gold standard for filtering hazardous particulate matter during air quality emergencies. Singaporeans should follow official guidance on mask distribution and replacement schedules, particularly during periods of elevated air pollution.
