ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Philippine education sector faced another tragic blow Tuesday when gunfire erupted at Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU), an elite Jesuit institution in the heart of Zamboanga City. The incident resulted in two deaths among junior high school students, with one of the deceased identified as the shooter.
The attack marked the second major school shooting in the Philippines in recent months, coming just weeks after the June shooting in Tacloban that claimed multiple lives. Schools across the region had been working to reinforce security measures and restore confidence in campus safety following that earlier incident.
AdZU, known as one of the country's premier educational institutions, was placed under heightened security following the shooting. Authorities launched an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the identity and motive of the shooter.
The shootings have reignited concerns among educators, parents, and policymakers about school safety protocols and access to firearms. Officials have pledged to review security measures at educational institutions nationwide and explore measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
