KATHMANDU — Rescue personnel extracted two survivors from a tunnel linked to a hydroelectric power station on Friday, nine days after a glacier collapse unleashed a devastating surge of ice, rock and debris across Nepal's Trishuli River valley.
The two individuals were discovered within the tunnel system serving the hydropower facility, providing a glimmer of hope in ongoing rescue and recovery efforts. The discovery marks one of the few confirmed survivals in the disaster zone since the glacier gave way, triggering the catastrophic torrent that swept through the region.
The September incident has left over 5,600 people unaccounted for, with the death toll exceeding 1,300. Rescue teams have been working around the clock through difficult terrain and unpredictable conditions to locate survivors and recover remains from the disaster area.
The hydropower station tunnel, which provided shelter from the initial onslaught of debris, likely aided in the survival of the two individuals discovered Friday. Authorities have intensified search operations across the affected region as hopes of finding additional survivors gradually diminish with each passing day.
