CALASIAO, Pangasinan — Two brothers lost their lives in a drowning incident at a fishpond in this municipality on Tuesday morning while harvesting water spinach for their family meal.
According to police reports, the siblings, ages 9 and 10, were gathering kangkong at the pond adjacent to their residence when the younger child ventured toward the deeper section of the water. The older brother attempted a rescue but was unable to prevent the tragedy.
Authorities responded to the incident and recovered both children from the pond. They were pronounced dead at the scene. The Philippine National Police is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about water safety among children in rural communities, where families often rely on nearby natural water sources for daily sustenance and livelihood activities.
