Manila — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that Typhoon Saudel, locally named Obet, is approaching the country with formidable strength as it reaches near super typhoon category.

As of 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, the weather system was positioned approximately 1,480 kilometers east-northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour, according to PAGASA data.

The typhoon is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Monday afternoon, bringing the system closer to island communities across the archipelago. The "near super typhoon" classification indicates the system is approaching the highest typhoon intensity scale.

Meteorologers are closely monitoring the trajectory and strength of Typhoon Obet as it moves westward. The public is advised to monitor weather updates and heed advisories from PAGASA as the typhoon draws nearer to Philippine territory.

Authorities in affected regions have been placed on alert to prepare response measures and ensure public safety once the system enters PAR.
