Researchers in the UAE have engineered a breakthrough building material that transforms desert sand and various industrial waste products into durable, environmentally-friendly bricks. The development addresses a critical need in the construction industry to reduce reliance on conventional Portland cement, which is both resource-intensive and carbon-heavy in its production.
The newly-developed bricks demonstrate enhanced sulfate resistance compared to traditional cement-based alternatives, making them particularly suitable for construction in challenging environments. This superior performance emerges despite requiring significantly less conventional cement—approximately half the amount used in standard brick manufacturing—thereby lowering both material costs and environmental impact.
A key advantage of the technology lies in its curing process, which occurs at room temperature rather than requiring energy-intensive heating. This approach substantially reduces the overall energy consumption associated with brick production, aligning with global sustainability objectives and making the manufacturing process more economically viable across the region.
