Uber pulls out of Nigeria and Uganda amid African market pressures

Uber has officially ceased operations in Nigeria and Uganda, marking a strategic retreat from two of Africa's largest ride-hailing markets. The company cited escalating operating expenses and fierce competitive pressure as key factors behind the decision, which reflects the increasingly challenging economics of the ride-hailing sector across sub-Saharan Africa.

The exit comes as driver earnings have been squeezed by a combination of factors, including soaring fuel costs and expensive vehicle maintenance. These pressures have compressed profit margins for independent drivers, making it difficult for the platform to retain talent in these competitive markets. The intensifying competition has also driven down fares, further eroding the financial viability of operations in both countries.

Despite withdrawing from Nigeria and Uganda, Uber has signalled its continued commitment to other sub-Saharan African markets where growth prospects remain more favourable. The company has indicated that it will focus resources on regions where unit economics and market conditions support sustainable expansion.

The pullback underscores the significant operational challenges facing international ride-hailing platforms in emerging African markets, where regulatory environments, infrastructure limitations, and competitive dynamics differ markedly from more developed economies. Industry analysts suggest the moves may prompt other platforms to reassess their strategies across the continent.
